Fire guts Balogun Market, Goods worth Millions of naira destroyed

Following another building fire at the well-known Balogun Market on Lagos Island, goods and properties worth millions of naira have been lost.

According to sources, one of the market buildings on Martins Street in Lagos is where the fire event that took place on Sunday morning, October 9, 2022, started from and spread to other locations.

As of the time of publication, the fire’s origin was unknown, although witnesses reported that it destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

Remember that the same Balogun Markets experienced fire outbreaks in November 2019, 2020, 2021, and even earlier in 2022, which resulted in the destruction of several items valued at millions of naira.

The fire has been extinguished by personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, as well as other emergency responders.

Firefighters and other first responders are struggling to douse the roaring fire at the area as of 1pm, according to Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, or LASEMA.

“The Agency responded to distress calls concerning the above location,” says Oke-Osanyitolu. “Upon arrival at the scene, a shop on the top floor of a four-story building was found to be gutted by fire.

“Additional information discovered that clothes supplies were kept inside the store.
