John McVicar, a former bank robber and “public enemy No. 1,” dies after a “heart attack” while out with his dog

Former Public Enemy No. 1 John McVicar went dead without a penny. Possibly suffering from a heart attack, the 82-year-old former bank robber passed out while walking his husky dog Lucky.

The daring 1968 escape of McVicar from Durham’s maximum security jail was made into a popular 1980 film starring Roger Daltrey of The Who. John wrote the script after giving up a life of crime and gaining accolades from academics.

But in the end, he was left to live alone in a trailer near Althorne, Essex, which was hidden behind a local pub.

It was an awful way to go, remarked Sister Janice. “He told me he felt chilly and lonely the last time I spoke to him,” McVicar was referred to as Public Enemy No. 1 by Scotland Yard after making his getaway from Durham. Despite having 23 years remaining to serve for an armed robbery, he managed to escape from a jail van.

Before being caught later, McVicar fired at a police car while fleeing. In 1978, he was finally freed.

“I was proud of him for getting his life back on track,” said Janice, 80. In 2010, Russell was given a 16-year prison term for eluding capture while on day parole and carrying out two armed robberies.

I am crushed by his passing, Janice said of her brother. I find it really tragic that he finished his days in such a way, despite the fact that he had cut himself off from his entire family.
