In an alleged murder attempt, Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was shot and injured while participating in a protest march in the eastern city of Wazirabad.

Four more people were injured on Thursday, according to members of his PTI party, but no one was killed.

He may have been struck in the foot or leg, but an assistant was reportedly quoted as claiming he was not in danger.

Mr. Khan, 70, was in charge of the march on Islamabad, the country’s capital, to seek early elections.

The AFP news agency was informed by a senior adviser that “this was an effort to kill him, to assassinate him.”
