Britain’s first leader of colour will be Rishi Sunak, one of the wealthiest MPs in Westminster. King Charles will formally ask him to form a government, succeeding outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss, who held the post for just 44 days before resigning.

The Deputy Prime Minister endorsed Indian-origin UK politician Rishi Sunak’s bid to become Prime Minister of Britain following Boris Johnson’s departure on July 7, 2022.

He received an endorsement from the Deputy Prime Minister of Britain Dominic Raab and transport minister Grant Shapps, who decided to ditch his own leadership bid to back Sunak.

Sunak Parents

Indian parents Yashvir and Usha Sunak, who were born in Kenya and Tanzania, respectively, welcomed their son Rishi Sunak into the world on May 12, 1980 in Southampton, Hampshire, in South East England.

His mother was a pharmacist who oversaw a neighbourhood drugstore, while his father was a general practitioner.

Sunak’s grandparents left East Africa in the 1960s and arrived in the UK. They were born in Punjab Province, British India. Of his three siblings, Sunak is the oldest.

His sister Rakhi works as the Head of Humanitarian, Peacebuilding, UN Funds and Programmes at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, while his brother Sanjay is a psychotherapist.

He graduated from Stanford University, Winchester College, Lincoln College, and Oxford. Sunak worked as a waiter at a restaurant during his summer break.

Rishi Sunak’s Business Career

He undertook an internship at Conservative Campaign Headquarters during his time at the university. From 2001 to 2004, he worked as an analyst at Goldman Sachs, an investment bank. He left the job to join The Children’s Investment Fund Management (TCI) and became a partner in September 2006. He joined another hedge fund firm Theleme Partners in 2009.

He also served as the director of investment firm Catamaran Ventures, owned by his father-in-law and businessman N. R. Narayana Murthy.

Sunak served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020, and he has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015.
